Cocks Crescent SPD approved – but all hope is not lost…

I would like to take the opportunity, on behalf of the Malden Independent Community Organisation, to thank all residents who supported our campaign against construction chaos at Cocks Crescent. Be you one of the 250 who turned up to our rally, one of the 713 who signed our call in, one of the 330 who wrote letters to their Councillors, one of the 1356 who supported our campaign via e-mail and social media, or one of our residents spreading the word with leafletting – a huge thank you to every one of you.

Thank you also to the 200 residents who turned up to Guildhall last Wednesday, providing a strong and united voice against construction chaos in Cocks Crescent and elsewhere in New Malden.

Sadly, despite our best efforts, the Conservative administration pushed through the SPD, breaking a pledge to Beverley Ward residents in the process. The full breakdown is below:

For clarity, voting ‘for’ is to uphold the decision and push through the SPD in its current form, and voting ‘against’ is to change the decision, i.e. not pushing through the current plans for overdevelopment.

This is, however, as ensured at Growth Committee in November, is by no means the end. The next stage of the development is the ‘masterplan’ stage, where the development will be decided in more detail. Councillor Davis and Councillor Cunningham promised to work with residents in shaping the development in this crucial stage, where residents could have the opportunity to be asked whether they want ‘the world’ and high-rise flats, or ‘half the world’ and lower rise flats.

We fully intend to hold Councillors Davis and Cunningham to their promise to work with residents in shaping the development, and will be campaigning hard to ensure he keeps his promise – we will fight for a consultation with residents on height, scale and density in this stage, as we set out above.

MICO members will be kept informed and have the full say on what is important to them within Cocks Crescent as we fight on their behalf for the future of our Town – I, as chairman, promise to involve  all who want to get involved.

I am sure that this decision will be remembered by you for some time, as it was a clear chance to change the direction of growth in our town, and prevent overdevelopment -I’m sure too that you will hold your representatives to account on this decision which they made on Wednesday.

I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to write to you with better news, however the fight goes on and I look forward to working with MICO members to shape the development in the next stages.

If you haven’t already joined MICO, you can do so by going to www.maldenindy.co.uk/join-us or calling 020 3020 0037.

We promise to keep fighting, on your behalf, to prevent gross overdevelopment and work for a true new heart for New Malden at Cocks Crescent.

James Giles, Chairman of MICO

on behalf of your MICO committee
