One final chance to save the fountain – calling in the decision

Following the decision, at Residents Committee on 14th September, to demolish the Fountain Roundabout and replace the roundabout with a crossroads junction, residents have one final chance to save New Malden Fountain Roundabout.

This is in the form of a ‘call in’, which forces the council to make the decision again, this time in front of all 48 Councillors.

The magic roundabout has been around at least as long as I have been. There’s something to be said about maturity. Why such a major loss to cultural heritage? I am not convinced new proposals will improve safety or the envoiroment.

It is high time we started doing what a lot of modern cities have been doing in other countries in Europe: to create pedestrian / bicycle underpasses at busy junctions to ease the traffic and make it safer for pedestrians to cross. The temporary disruption would pay off immensely in the long run and we would keep the distinctive and attractive landmark of the fountain intact,

I’m not sure what is being proposed instead of the Council’s plan, but that roundabout is incredibly dangerous for cyclists. I always ride on the pavement to avoid going round it, so as far as I’m concerned, the space is already shared. I admit the proposed crossing doesn’t look a lot safer. I’ve only just seen this, but at the very least I would have suggested putting in cycle traffic lights to give cyclists priority to cross it before cars as has been done in central London. The volume of traffic certainly merits it.
